Comments are Content

If the purpose of your blog is to generate more traffic to your web site through organic search, then you want to capture as many reader comments as possible. Doing so can significantly grow the amount of text indexed by search engines, potentially multiplying it many times over. When you consider how difficult and time consuming it is to write a blog post, being able to capture more content through comments can be viewed as a significant costs savings.

On my own sites, one of the metrics I track is comment density. This is simply the number of posts on a site, divided by the number of comments. As you build an audience, and dial in the subject matter that they want to read, you should see in increase in comment density over time. When this occurs, and it can take years, your audience may be contributing as much or even more content to your blog as you.
